I wonder if, in the far far future, when BloodXL is feature complete and working, we'll be able to easily add support for other build engine games, particularly the forgotten ones, like:
Witchaven 1 and 2
Redneck Rampage
TekWar
Powerslave

Would be great.

Beyond that scope, I can only think of Killing Time and Realms of the Haunting. But then, those are other engines, other trips.

It's possible but no immediate plans or promises.

Ooh! Yes, please!

I know that's way off on another branch of unrelated engines, but I had to at least put in a vote of support for the request, or I couldn't live with myself.

In the meanwhile, you can actually buy RotH on GOG.com now, though it is apparently the UK version that lacked difficulty adjustment and keyboard remapping...

Noted, same response applies though. :)

I think this may happen as 3rd party collaborations once the engine becomes open source. I kinda think of the planned XL Engine as a ScummVM for first person 3D game. With support for both mesh-based and sector-based games (Xngine, Jedi and Build emulated so far), and a maybe on grid-based games (there was something said about perhaps a ArenaXL in the future), just about all the 3D games from before the Quake era could be emulated with some work.

But if you look at ScummVM, there are plenty of developers working on different engines.

I know I'd be interested in looking at the possibility of using the XL engine as a platform to emulate Ultima Underworld II or Shadowcaster, for example.

This sounds like an excellent idea for the future. More than one person could work on support for other games when the engine is open source, until then the four games currently being emulated are more than enough. ;)

You guys are quite clearly underestimating how much work that would be. The simple fact that Blood is going to be supported should tide you over for a while and as for Redneck Rampage I'd Google eRampage if I was you. As for PowerSlave why not learn C and grab the EDuke32 source and try for yourself? Finally, for TekWar and the Witchaven series who cares? Those games were awful even by the standards set at the time.

As I said, the FAR FAR future. In fact, I trust more in the idea of a Scummvm like iniciative than a tired and burned out Lucius going crazy about adding these build games to an already massive project. Not to mention the non-build ones I mentioned.

That said, no matter how bad games are, there's always someone with fond memories trying to play them again. And I find it quite heartbreaking that Build port builders never take a minimum time to look at those games. I mean, look at Doom source ports, they support every doom engine game out there, even Strife. And Scummvm is all about supporting more and more games as time goes. Not to mention the massive work that goes on MAME.

Now, you actually made me think of giving EDuke32's code a look. I never took much interest in these sort of things... :ugeek:

Don't worry, I don't mind suggestions. I don't think of them as something I have to do but rather something that someone would like. But there are a couple of things I have to keep in mind when personally emulating a game (i.e. once the XL Engine is mature and Open Source someone else can work on this too, as several people haven mentioned):

* I have time (i.e. meaning no "ports" that are not currently on the list until at least 2 of the current projects are in Beta or beyond - most likely DarkXL and DaggerXL).

* It's a game that I personally enjoy. All the games in the list are games that I'm a fan of and wished for ports in the past. This last point is absolutely required for projects like these, unless you're getting paid big bucks. You spend so much time learning the intricate details of the games that if you don't enjoy them, you'll go crazy. :?

Since I'm not planning on releasing the XL Engine source code until it is mature and clean, it'll be a while before other people can start porting stuff. While many will disagree, I don't want people basing their work on sub-optimal code that will probably change drastically. I will, however, be releasing all the scripts and game code much sooner then that - once a project goes to Beta (or sooner).

This is how I feel too. I can imagine (In a decade or so) the XL Engine being as recognized and mature as SCUMMVM, with ports ranging from AmigaOS to the Dingoo and iPhone and so on. It will be so popular that the novelty of such a thing will have worn off. Phrases such as "Oh, I've played that game on XL before" will become common. And Lucius will be rich from donations.
