Hey there!

My first post on the forum, bear with me here :oops:

After being almost infuriated by Morbus Darkes (or whats his face) terribly arrogant post and his forbiddance to use "his" map in DaggerXL I wanted to delve into the alternative possibilities a little further.

I never created a hightmap, but I doubt that it actually has to be 3D. I have experience in World Machine and Terragen, but I dislike using them since I'm ashamed to call so many automated processes my own work. I open Photoshop, make a solid black background, add the landscape in a dark grey and simply add mountains by layering white areas the higher the topography has to be. Some broad and unskilled strokes with my Wacom, load it into World Machine or Terragen, use the erode-function a few times and thats it. Anyone who needs 6 months for something like that either has a terrible machine, dilettante time-managment or the artistic skills of a rodent. Full stop.

Since Möbius map isn't an option anymore (and we should be glad for it), how about a custom made, hand-drawn Tamriel hightmap exclusively for DaggerXL? I already posted some comments under the blog topic, but actually I'd love to redo the Daggerfall map in HD as well. Just a quick example of what this map could look like:

Thats just about a quarter of the map I did for the Witcher games (free cookies for everyone who identified it without all the cities and titles :mrgreen: ), which is completely hand-drawn without any copyrighted material used. Since it's based on Sapkowskis and CD Projekts works, I don't need any credit for it since it isn't fully my work, its just fan art. I will never forbid anyone to use this map in their own works, even though of course I'd be flattered if I was credited. I planned doing a map of Tamriel in a similar style, but I'd be even more motivated if it was done for an awesome project like this one. And after whitnessing this nauseating, self-rightous egoism, I'm still MORE motivated.

So I am offering to draw a hightmap as well as a fully detailed HD map of Daggerfall and Tamriel (to make sure the maps look consistant), but I don't want to start right away without anyone telling me if this is even needed. Maybe someone else is already working on it or maybe an alternative has been found, but I am ready and eager! The map would be Lucius property as soon as its finished, for him to use it any way he likes, and like I said before, I don't even need credit for it. Thats not what art is about in my opinion. And additionally, even without using automated features like the ones World Machine is offering, I wouldn't even need half of the time that Mortus guy states he took for it. Neither for the hightmap, nor a more detailed HD map with forests and coloured landscape.

So, if you want the map, fully custom and fully available to anything Lucius is planning, just drop me a line and I'll start right away. Showing pretentious egoists that their barely decent work isn't even needed is such a great motivator! :lol:

P.S: After seeing that I can just start a poll, I did just that! ;)

A custom/fan made heightmap would be fantastic. I can set you up with all the height/climate maps as well as proportions, if you want.

Here are the maps:

This is the small greyscale map, each pixel is roughly 800x800m

It would bу great to see a custom high-res and finely tuned map for DaggerXL, no matter if it'll be heightmap for original game, just texture for navigation map or simple art.

By the way until you told that's Witcher one I thought I saw something similar, but I didn't got it :)

Welcome IronsteffL, When I read the blog it was a big disappointment, I really wanted to see the extreme view distance in the beta.

But that make me think, did not ragholio said that he has a Tamriel heigh map ready to use if were needed? Maybe we should ask him.

Your map seems very nice I really like the streams and the forests, although the mountains reliefs seems a bit weird, I don't know how to describe it, Brendan is good for constructive critiques, so if he notices something weird he'll know how to describe it.

But It's nothing fatal, so don't worry! Actually I was wondering if you, or Freak2121, or ragholio (or all of you in colaboration) could do a HD Daggerfall map to replace the existing map images in Daggerfall, because i'm unable to manage such thing, but I would be honored to include it in my HD UI project if someone do it.

I know I sound very pretentious, but it's a thing I can't do and Daggerfall deserves a nice map. I've seen some of your work and I think it's great, so I saw this as an oportunity to ask.

Making a heightmap for DaggerXL shouldn't be too hard, because it's on a very large scale. You just need to think about the elevation of an area, not really its precise shape on a macro scale.

I made a small little extension just to show what a possible heightmap may look like. Don't take it very seriously, the proportions and heights and everything are all wrong.

Umm, I'm with that project quite long time and as far as I remember ragholio never posted a map. Furthermore quoted post doesn't state anything about full map, only height one. We have some there, but one more wouldn't hurt, right?
Also, ragholio once pointedto some cool heightmap.

Yes, and that's exactly what DaggerXL needs right now, a Tamriel's heightmap.

I think that map is the one who Lucius used and turned into the heightmap that brings all the problems.
