Dark Forces Demo version(s)

Postby Kurgan » Fri Jul 08, 2011 8:04 pm

I remember for DOS there was a 3 level demo version of the game
released (and it's included on every CD-ROM of the game).

Why you ask? Because it's different in some respects to the full version.

For starters the energy cells (bryar/ST rifle ammo) pickups use a different
sprite (more of a big pouch). The briefings and PDA are slightly different
looking, and there may be some other differences that I'm unaware of (I"ve heard rumors of different item and secret placement).
There's also an additional opening cutscene which features a blue-tinted
suit-up sequence for Kyle.

I'm not sure how the Mac demo was, but I'm pretty sure one existed.
Not sure if it was 1 level only or if it was also the first 3 levels like the
DOS demo.

Another difference, was that Secret base was more complete, and feature-rich... Such as some additional secrets, some thermal detonators, and a few destructible, cracked walls which you'd use them on. Though, the demo I am thinking of, was only 1 level if I recall.
Got my hands on Terminal Velocity's source code. But since XL Engine is dead, I'll never be able to write a module for it. So, standalone port it is...

A very Commando like sequence.

I have this in my main game intro!

I remember seeing the demo, and somewhere online years ago there was a guide on how to put that sequence back into the main game intro. I have no idea now how I did it, but I could upload the now built-in files to Lucius or somewhere if others want to put it back in their version.

Here is the extra Gear Up snippet from the demo for the intro and simple installation instructions, as I originally downloaded in 1999:

Link updated.

If someone can please let me know if this works alright for them?

If you hit the switch in the dark room with Interrogation Droids in the secret area, the game will start spawning infinite Stormtroopers for the player to test all the acquired arsenal. I don't think the full game ever does anything like that.

That said, I think it would be nice if they released the scrapped Star Destroyer level (which was originally intended to be the first level) as a demo level.
