SOLVED: Game crashes immediately on startup

I ran the launcher, specified my game path for Dark Forces (I have the Steam version installed), and then hit play. The screen goes black for a second, and then it crashes. "DarkXL.exe has stopped working. A problem has caused the program to stop working correctly."

I have tried setting the launcher and DarkXL.exe to both run as administrator, and it did the same thing.

I am on Windows 7 64-bit. Help?

Edit: Running them as admin and compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 3 fixes the problem.

This can't be solved yet, I'm getting the exact same thing only I'm on XP Home SP3.

I took a look at the other topics here and those havn't helped. I've also tried the obvious things, i.e: Running in compatibility mode, changing desktop resolution, moving and renaming game fold (I have steam copy)

Assistance would be welcome.

Hmm.

Wish I could help you, but I'm running Win 7x64, and am not having any problems running the latest version of DarkXL.

Note:

I realized I was not running it from the folder Steam installs it to.
When I pointed the launcher to the required folder under Steam, it failed to launch with an error in the event log.

I copied the files in the D:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\dark forces\Game folder to D:\Dark, reset my path to D:\Dark, attempted to run XLEngine, then Dark Forces -- And voila -- It works.

Maybe it doesn't like something in the pathname Steam installs to?

Woo! This post should be pinned or something. I had the same issue with crashing at startup, but once I copied the steam Game folder to a different location and pointed DarkXL to that new location, game loaded. I'm still getting a few unexpected crashes, but I wouldn't even be playing the game without the help of this thread. Thanks!

I had a similar problem. When using the launcher, a UAC dialog appears, but not when running DarkXL directly. You can get around this by enabling "Run this program as an administrator" under the compatibility tab in the properties for DarkXL.exe.
