Dark Textures

Postby LimLam » Wed Feb 26, 2014 12:59 pm

I've noticed that the guys in the 3d models thread have started doing a more "darker" style on their models, more like in Morrowind and Skyrim.

So therefor i felt that the textures should be darker too, to match the models better.

Here i made some examples:

Off course, the grass and sand isn't really "dark", but it's darker than the original ones are. X3 Also, the walls aren't tile-able enough yet, and i will fix that later.

(yes, i've used cgtextures a bit, mostly just for the lion head)

These look nice, but you will need a lot more or else fields of grass and sand will look like a bunch of repeating tiles.

I hope when the betas released, we will have enough textures and collaboration among the artists that all of Daggerfall is retextured.

Didn't mean to sound critical. Just pointing out that one thing because I saw it in GTA SA road retexture mods and more AOE2 mods than you would believe where people think they can make 3 tiles and use them for the entire map.

Looks really good LimLam, those are the full size images?

One single thing I would say, it's just a personal thing: the Lion head looks stunning, almost made for the texture, but the fact that the item in the texture is so relevant makes the using of a foreing image a bit out of place.

In the composition, the lion bronze head is central, and I think it would be better to do it from scratch or composing the image out of many images, to finish with an original element made especially for the texture. The same with the skull in the door texture, but as I said before, it's just a personal taste, so keep up the good work.

Thankies, guvnor. ;)

Yes, they are in full size. I know many might expect exaggerated sizes such as 1200x800, but i feel that Daggerfall isn't detailed enough to have such high resolution. I think Morrowind with such texture pack looks crappy, same for Minecraft.

As for the lion, i've made some changes now.

I'm currently remaking the map screen where you choose your race.

I agree with making non-highres textures. Some sort of pixel-look surely fits the game and the generally low graphics detail. And especially with the more detailed 3D-objects by AlexanderSig the original textures would finally be too low-res to fit, so having a medium-resolution texture replacement for large parts of the game would be amazing.
