Hello, I have been away from the site for a long time. I have been meaning to post an update but I find it difficult to do so when I don’t have good news. For a while now, I have been swamped with too many things going on and have been unable to spend much time with the XL Engine. Among other things, without going into detail, this includes more responsibility at work, a project coming to a close and frantically trying to meet some hard deadlines.

However I have not given up on the project and will be returning with updates again as soon as possible. I expect to be able to be able to continue working on the project in earnest within a few weeks and should return to making regular updates at that time.

Again, sorry for not communicating this earlier – I didn’t realize it would take so long to get everything into order.

Take your time. Real life does exist. Just don’t give up!

  • John:

We support you every step of the way.

  • Foo Diddley:

Delays are not news to anyone who has been following the project, lol

Thanks for letting us all know you’re still around and working on it, though!

  • Megalomano:

No problem lucius, we can wait. Thanks for the update!

  • Anon:

That is completely fine, and thank you for telling all of us who eagerly await.

    Take care!

  • Mike:

Pretty sure we’ve been checking the blog weekly, some even more frequently. Patiently waiting. This project means a lot to us. Take your time, but don’t forget us!

  • Okra:

Is there some reason you wont go open source with this? This could be finished in a matter of weeks opposed to years this has been going on.

    • xrror:

If I recall correctly, lucius wanted Dark Engine to at least a feature complete state before going open source, to avoid and potential pressure that later he would need to keep compatibility with any potential early forks.

Lucous tends to do some pretty major code refactors when he goes back and digs into something, I’m guessing it’s just less stress to not need to worry about managing a “core team of devs” if say he just goes in and guts 90% of the code.

I’m sure he gets enough of that at his “day job” and DarkEngine is supposed to be his hobby project to relax.

This is just a guess though, maybe he’s just taking his time coding SkyNet in there ;)

  • Mike B.:

Glad to hear from you again! I’m looking forward to this project enough that I’m willing to wait years yet, so don’t give up indeed! :D

  • scotty:

good things come to those who wait.

  • Lee:

It is nice to see a long awaited update.

I have been following your work for many years, I was hoping you would have finished the dark forces port first, as this was your original intention.

I am amazed how big the project has become. Good luck and keep up the good work. :-)

  • Magnvs:

I was so happy to see another update! I check this page and the forums every morning and even not so great news is better than no news :)

  • Andrea:

Calm is the virtue of the strong! Good luck, we will wait patiently! ;)

  • rat just died:

Well… I guess I will check on the project sometime during fall. There is no real reason to hurry, and it wouldn’t feel fair to citicize a project that is being developed by one man only.

  • Atrixium:

The rigors of work suck sometimes, if only we all could drop out of the rat race and commit our time to the things we are each truly passionate about, that would be a beautiful thing, alas we all have bills to pay and mouths to feed.

  • Eric D:

In Agreeance with Scotty here! Been following this for a few years now and always love hearing about the updates! Regardless of real life, all the work you’re doing is appreciated by everyone here, and once it releases, it’ll all be worth it! :)

  • Seems like we are a patient lot here :D

  • Nicholas:

Christ alive, this is taking long.

  • Razara:

I’m willing to wait as long as it takes! Please don’t give up! :D

  • Toxicshadow:

+1 for a quick update. Just a simple one line in these comments would be good.

  • Razara:

At least make your code OSS if you’re going to give up? :< Lots of good code is lost as a result of people giving up and then never publishing their code.

    • omfgzhax:

lol, he took almost 2 years to update his blog once.
This project seems to be that thing you have to keep in a notepad somewhere to remind you, only for you to forget about that document until months later, checking it out once more and seeing still nothing has been done, and repeat.
But yeah, people like myself have been waiting for years, I’ve been on here checking since 2011.

      • Razara:

        I still have hope!

If this game really does get released, it will be worth all the delays in the world. The demos of this game have already gone past any conceivable expectation of the original, so it’s not like Duke Nukem Forever where the final project will be disappointing if it’s not the equivalent of modern next generation games. Honestly, I’d be happy with a full release of this even if it’s as glitchy as the original. Even more so, since new glitches would be fun to exploit! :3

  • Mike:

    Is he ever coming back?

  • Razara:

How much money do I have to donate to make this actually happen?

  • Mike:

Could you please at least make the code Open Source and pass the torch?

  • Razara:

Please make it Open Source Software, for the love of God. T-T

  • omfgzhax:

Yeah, just make the project open source, it’s been like 9 months since we’ve heard from you.
We love and appreciate the project but at this rate I don’t see it happening…
Been waiting seven years for the playable build, announce a date it’ll be done and I’ll donate $10 the moment it happens.

    • Razara:

In addition to that, I’ll donate at least $100 to support this project. I can’t give my entire salary, but make a Patreon channel, and I’ll make it worth your while. >_>

  • TheUnbeholden:

What the hell is going on with this thing? So this was all just a tease? There wasn’t any intention on a release? Why hasn’t this been made into open source. I’m finding it really hard to believe that this was started, promises given and then ditched at no moments notice… disappointing.
